I had big plans today for a good nap. I couldn't sleep last night so I was still awake tossing and turning at 4 this morning. I had to get P up for school at 6:30, and had him on the bus by 7:01. My pillow never felt softer, the bed more comfortable. Right as I started to doze off the school calls. I didn't know it was the school, so I tried to ignore it. Then I hear, "This is so and so from elementary school. P threw up on the bus and he is sick." Then my cell rings and I have to answer it. They tell me the same thing with an emphasis on sick. I figured he got car sick because he was perfectly fine this morning. He wrapped his teacher's gift and I taught him how to use my old digital camera. The way they spoke you would think that the child hasn't stopped throwing up. I told them I was on my way and went to pick him up. I got to school and he wasn't waiting in the office. They had sent him to the classroom to take the teacher his gift because he kept fumbling around and dropping it on the floor. Ummm, I thought he was sick. I waited until he got back to the office. He looked fine to me. He acted fine.
Me: "Are you feeling sick?"
P: "No, I'm ok."
Me: "Did you get car sick?"
P: "No, I got bus sick."
Me: "Are you sure?"
P: "Yeah it was just too bumpy"
Me: "Well, come on."
We start to walk out of the office and he asks me "I have to go home? What about our holiday party?". I told him that he threw up and they want him to go home.
P: "But I'm not sick. I don't want to go home."
So we went back into the office and I told them that he was fine, he just got car sick and he wants to stay. They very obviously did not like that. They just kept giving me evil looks. I asked them again. "Does he have to go home?" They told me that a bad stomach virus was going around. (When is there not?) So they decided to check his temperature. Hello??? Why did they not do that before? They felt he was well enough to walk to the end of the school to expose his germs to the classroom and teacher to give him a present but he isn't well enough to stay in school. P was very fidgety and just wanted to go to class. He kept asking me if he had to stay in the office all day. They finally decided that he wasn't running a fever and so he could stay but gave me a warning. (I'm not kidding, a warning) "If he throws up again, we will just have to call you again." Oh gee, thanks. I didn't know that. It will be this huge deal for me to have to stop and come pick him up. What's with this whole you are a terrible parent for letting your terribly sick child stay in school when we don't want him here routine?
The child gets car sick enough times a month for me to know it when I see it. I won't have to pick him up today.
So since I am up I guess I might as well go into work and get it over with. Then I will finish up my Christmas shopping. Or maybe I will do the shopping first, before the crowds hit. I love being able to make my own work schedule. As long as I show up it doesn't matter when.
